WASHINGTON, DC -- The Solar Electric Power Association (SEPA) and Association for Demand Response and Smart Grid (ADS) announced today that they are joining forces and will now move forward as one organization under the SEPA banner.
(Washington, DC – October 23, 2020) The Association for Demand Response & Smart Grid (ADS) released a new case study today that examines how San Diego Gas & Electric’s Borrego Springs microgrid was designed, approved, and implemented as a utility-owned microgrid, as well as how the stakeholders involved had to learn, adapt, and change along the way. The narrative-style case study is the sixth in an ADS series that goes behind the scenes to examine the goals, reasoning, and processes used to design and evaluate program and project offerings and tools.
(Washington, DC – August 5, 2020) “One of the issues with the draft Clean Power Plan (CPP) was its lack of recognition that there are new options, both on the demand side and within the grid itself, for reducing emissions through reduced energy generation, transmission, and consumption.
“The final CPP, issued earlier this week, corrects that omission. The final plan makes clear that states have flexibility, by submitting a compliance plan under the State Measures option, to include smart grid technologies and practices like demand response. Examples that the final plan acknowledges such as Conservation Voltage Reduction (CVR) and line loss reduction are each part of the concept and design of grid modernization and each can yield definitive electricity and thus emissions reductions. The final plan also acknowledges that demand response (DR), or demand side management as the plan refers to it, also produces savings and is not simply a shifting of energy production and consumption."

(Washington, DC – July 7, 2020) In anticipation of its National Town Meeting on Demand Response and Smart Grid taking place on July 12 – 14 in Washington, DC, the Association for Demand Response & Smart Grid (ADS) announced today the release of its new report summarizing state policy activities in the area of demand response and smart grid. The survey report, “Demand Response & Smart Grid - State Legislative and Regulatory Policy Action Review: May 2010 – June 2011,” catalogues efforts undertaken by state regulatory commissions, state legislatures, state agencies, and governors. The report builds off two previous reports similar in scope, published in June 2010 and December 2008, respectively, and prepared by the ADS under its previous name, the Demand Response Coordinating Committee (DRCC).
According to Dan Delurey, Executive Director of the ADS, the new report tallies how far state policymaking in support of demand response and smart grid has come over the past few years. “It is possible to say that things have reached or gone beyond a tipping point, where DR and smart grid are on almost everyone’s plate and on almost every state’s agenda.”
(Washington, DC – March 14, 2020) The Demand Response Coordinating Committee (DRCC) announced today that it is changing its membership structure in accordance with the services it will now provide as a professional membership society. Reflecting this new focus, the DRCC has changed its name to the Association for Demand Response & Smart Grid (ADS).
Tim Roughan, Director of Product Management for National Grid and Chairman of DRCC/ADS, said the change made sense at this point in time. “Over the past 10 years, there has been tremendous growth in the number of individuals that refer to themselves as demand response and smart grid professionals, yet there has been no organization for these people to join as individuals,” said Roughan.
Back to top(June 17, 2020 Washington, DC) The DRCC applauded the issuance today by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) of a National Action Plan on Demand Response, calling it a significant step on the road to establishment of the smart grid.
