Case Study: National Grid

This narrative-style case study, the fifth on its series, goes behind the scenes to examine the goals, reasoning, and processes used to design and evaluate a utility's program offerings and tools.

This case study is based on interviews with employees of National grid, and other stakeholders involved, about the utility’s Non-Wires Alternatives pilot, which began in 2012 in Rhode Island.

Welcome to ADS!

Over the past decade or more, there has been tremendous growth in the number of individuals that consider themselves to be demand response and smart grid professionals, yet there has been no organization for these people to join as individuals.

The Demand Response Coordinating Committee (DRCC) was a 501 c (3) non-profit organization whose mission has been to increase the knowledge base in the U.S. on demand response and to facilitate the exchange of information and expertise among demand response practitioners and policy makers. It later adopted smart grid as part of its charter as it recognized early that demand response and smart grid were necessarily intertwined, and that demand response was one of the primary ways that the smart grid would be “put into action.” Since the DRCC formed in 2004, it offered only corporate and organizational memberships.

As of March 14, 2020, the DRCC has been known as the Association for Demand Response & Smart Grid (ADS). Technology companies, utilities, non-profit organizations, academic institutions, and other entities are welcome, but ADS is now also a membership association for demand response and smart grid professionals.

Learn how to become a member of ADS here.
