Webinar Description:

ROUNDTABLE: Building on the DR Legacy
Just as decades of work on DARPANET made possible the development of the World Wide Web and the Internet, we have decades of experience with DR and load management programs. Our panelists, who have all been innovators on the retail and wholesale levels, will summarize how we got to this point. Mark Martinez has been involved in the evolution of programs and practices at SCE and in California. He introduced the idea of making energy use visible through devices like the Energy Orb. Chris King of eMeter founded the Demand Response and Smart Grid Coalition, invented Peak Time Rebate rate design and has been one of the leading policy thinkers in the space. David Brewster of EnerNOC is one of the people that has helped introduce new business models for demand response that has taken it to new levels as a resource and a customer option.

Together they will explore:

  • What myths about demand response have been dispelled and which ones still exist?
  • How does this experience with commercial and industrial DR programs inform programs, policies, and business models for broader participation in conscious energy practices?
  • Why should the general public care about utility adoption of distribution automation and C&I participation in DR?
  • What are the obstacles to wider national adoption of techniques and devices that have already proven effective?
  • What are the implications for DR service providers in their relationship with utilities?
  • How will the integration and synchronization of EE programs and measures impact evolving DR wholesale markets and new dynamic pricing rates?
  • What are the pitfalls that can be avoided as we move into the future?

This Webinar will be conducted in roundtable fashion, similar to the National Town Meeting on Demand Response and Smart Grid panels. It will involve presentations of data and information, but also feature discussion among the presenters, lively Q&A with the moderator, and a lot of time devoted to questions from Webinar attendees.
